Course Time: Saturday, 7:30 am registration. Course runs 8 am - 5 pm both days.
Course Location: ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, 900 E Grant St, Appleton (Use the Grant street entrance of the East Building)

Course Description:
This course is clinically focused and designed to teach each participant to be thorough, effective, and efficient when managing patients with musculoskeletal sources of upper neck, head, and face pain. Lecture material will cover both context and background information including but not limited to relevant anatomy, pathology, joint mechanics, interdisciplinary management, and pain science. A comprehensive approach for the examination, diagnosis, and management of upper neck, headache (HA), and temporomandibular (TM) disorder pain will be presented. The content will be both academically rigorous and clinically focused to optimize the education experience. Upon completion of this course, each student will possess the skills necessary to begin managing this all too often underserved patient population.
Course Objectives:
- Review relevant context and background information related to HA and TM disorders
- Discern between people with and without clinically significant tissue impairments contributing to the headache presentation
- Utilize appropriate techniques, including manual therapy, for the evaluation and management of HA and TM disorders
- Develop a plan of care based on case-specific identified impairments
- Devise an appropriate home program for patient self-management
- Recognize relevant peer-reviewed literature related to HA and TM disorders
- Understand appropriate interdisciplinary interventions for the management of people with HA and TM disorders

Instructors Bios:
Garrett Naze, PT, DPT, OCS, CCTT, FAAOMPT is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at High Point University. Having earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Marquette University, Dr. Naze went on to complete an orthopedic physical therapy residency program with UW-Health/Merriter Hospitals and the orthopedic manual physical therapy fellowship program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is also a Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapist through the Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial and Cervical Therapeutics. Dr. Naze has unique training, having served as the physical therapist in the interdisciplinary Orofacial Pain Clinic at the University of Kentucky, working with dentistry and clinical psychology to manage patients with complex, chronic pain conditions.
Stephen M. Shaffer, PT, ScD, FAAOMPT is a full-time clinician and has managed patients with jaw and cervical spine disorders for over 14 years. In 2005 and 2009 he completed residency and fellowship training in orthopedics at the Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy in Woburn, Massachusetts and the University of Illinois at Chicago, respectively. In 2013, he completed academic doctoral training in orthopedics at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Shaffer and his colleagues have authored multiple temporomandibular peer-reviewed papers and have presented at graduate programs as well as at local, state, national, and international venues.
