A Case Based Learning Experience Pediatric Sports Physical Therapy
Description
This dynamic and fun two-hour session will use case-based learning, covering a real-world, outpatient pediatric case to facilitate an active learning experience. Application of patient-centered and evidence-informed practice will be included with an emphasis on clinical reasoning and meta-cognitive processes utilizing the test retest model. The session is designed to help learners understand how to effectively obtain a thorough subjective examination that supports hypothesis development, planning of an appropriate objective examination and supportive treatment that seek to implement the hypothetico-deductive reasoning model.
For each case the mechanism of injury, the history and the initial subjective information will be presented. Attendees will then be asked to create a differential diagnosis based on this information. The presenter will then share the process for defining the diagnosis and overview for pearls and pitfalls in treating that diagnosis. 8-10 cases will be presented.
About The Speaker(s)
Marc Sherry, PT, DPT, LAT, CSCS, PES, is a Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer. His clinical practice specializes in pediatric ACL injuries, hamstring strain injuries, and youth sports injuries. In addition to direct patient care, he manages the Sports Rehabilitation Department at UW Health East Madison Hospital. He was instrumental in designing and operationalizing a 28,000 square foot sports rehab and performance facility for University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse Physical Therapy program in 1994 and received his DPT from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2009. He is also a Licensed Athletic Trainer, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Performance Enhancement Specialist. He has served terms as the chair and vice chair of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy’s “Youth Athlete” Special Interest group, and is involved in clinical research and published numerus articles related to hamstring strain injuries. His research is primarily focused on hamstring injuries and rehabilitation. His publication entitled “A comparison of two rehabilitation programs in the treatment of acute hamstring strains” won the 2004 JOSPT (Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy) excellence in research award and has been cited over 400 times. Marc is the chair of APTA Wisconsin's Professional Development committee. He has given numerous lectures; regional, national and internationa and has also coached youth sports for 15 years.
