A Case Based Learning Experience: Management of Temporomandibular Pain/Dysfunction
Description
This dynamic and fun two-hour session will use case-based learning, covering a real-world, outpatient orthopedic case to facilitate an active learning experience. Application of patient-centered and evidence-informed practice will be included with an emphasis on clinical reasoning and meta-cognitive processes utilizing the test retest model. The session is designed to help learners understand how to effectively obtain a thorough subjective examination that supports hypothesis development, planning of an appropriate objective examination and supportive treatment that seek to implement the hypothetico-deductive reasoning model.
Patient is a 22-year-old female undergraduate student at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). She works part time as an office assistant and tutor on campus, and is preparing to start medical school at UW-Madison in August. She has been experiencing a 2-3 month history of left-sided jaw pain. Despite the absence of a clear mechanism of injury, her symptoms have progressively worsened, causing significant discomfort that impacts her daily activities.
In this webinar, we will analyze this case through the following lenses:
- A comprehensive evaluation to determine the root cause of jaw pain, including
- consideration of postural and muscular factors, stress, and lifestyle habits.
- How to identify and differentiate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, myofascial pain, and other musculoskeletal issues in the orofacial region.
- Effective treatment strategies including manual therapy techniques, neuromuscular re-education, and therapeutic exercise prescription.
- Practical patient education on managing stress and preventing the exacerbation of jaw pain during periods of high stress.
