Southwest District presents, A Deeper Dive into Ethics in Clinical Education
Description
This four-hour blended course, approved by APTA Wisconsin to fulfill the state's 4 hour ethics requirement, will provide an overview of professional documents as well as Wisconsin statutes as they pertain to physical therapy. Participants will complete pre-course readings to address three assigned cases and a pre-quiz (2 hours will be on your own time). Learners will actively engage in the online, synchronous session with opportunities to reflect on and discuss the cases and share questions with course instructors and peers. Topics include FERPA, assessment using the Clinical Performance Instrument, conflicts of interest, and addressing potential signs of abuse. Each participant will receive three cases to read and questions to answer prior to attending the course. The registration deadline is Monday, October 5 in order to provide time to complete the pre-course work. A brief 15-20 minute District business meeting will follow the course.
Objectives: At the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify the PT/PTA Core values.
- Discuss supervision requirements of support personnel (includes students, PTA, rehab aides/techs) per WI state Statutes.
- Discuss the implications of various reimbursement models as they relate to students.
- Discuss implications of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 FERPA as a clinical instructor.
- Discuss conflict of interests relative to the clinical instructor and student relationship.
- Defend decisions using legal and professional documents.
About The Speaker(s)
Sue Wenker, PT, PhD, MS, GCS emeritus received her BS at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and her Masters and PhD degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison through the School of Education. She is actively involved in the Academy of Geriatrics. Dr. Wenker currently teaches the professional seminar series and foundational skills course in the UW-Madison DPT program. Additionally, she teaches the Credentialed Clinical Instructor Course and serves on multiple campus committees for teaching, leadership, and interprofessional programming. Dr. Wenker was the recipient of the Joan M. Mills Service Award and Distinguished Educator awards as recognized by the APTA Geriatrics in 2020.
Jeanne Duncan, PT, DPT received her BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her transitional DPT from the College of St. Scholastica. Dr. Duncan is the Director of Clinical Education in the UW-Madison DPT program and currently assists in teaching the Cardiopulmonary content in the curriculum. Dr. Duncan is also a Credentialed Clinical Instructor and a current member the of WPTA Clinical Education SIG.
