The Emotional Side of Wellness: How Perspective Influences Resilience, Performance, Motivation and Health
1 - 2:30 pm
We will begin by discussing broadly how mental health works, with an eye toward the relationship between specific perspectives or habitual ways of thinking and mood states. We will review how one develops depression, anxiety, reduced motivation or hopelessness and how that intersects with healthcare disciplines and their work. We will consider concepts like “resilience” and consider what might need to be in place for a person to be persevere through difficulty or when gains are only realized over long recovery timelines requiring patience and sustained effort. We will consider ways we might use psychological principles to build trust and then use our stronger rapport to improve patient outcomes. Finally, we will consider ways that we might be thoughtful and gracious toward ourselves as we work to be helpful to those who need care, considering where we do and do not have control over this process and outcome. Participants should leave this program with a better understanding of how mental health issues manifest as well as tactful strategies for influencing challenging patients or those with comorbid mental health needs.
