Parking: Enter campus through the Main Entrance off Highland Road. Turn right (east) for parking lots A & B.
Health Professions Lecture Hall HS011: Enter the Luther building just north of Parking Lot A. Proceed west down a long hallway to the Rincker building. For the stairway to lower level, turn left to enter the Health Professions Building (HS). Proceed to the lower level via the stairway located on the right side of the hallway. The elevator to lower level located further west in Rinckner along the south hallway. HS011 is located in the center of the hallway on the lower level of the HS building.
Course Description
This course uses motivational interviewing (MI) and cardiovascular/pulmonary physical therapy (PT) as a lens to evidence-based decisions. We shall discuss the current state of evidence in clinical practice and examine effective methods for article search, retrieval, and appraisal. We shall examine the quantity and quality of evidence examining MI in cardiovascular/pulmonary PT. Effect size and/or numbers needed treat will be examined to appreciate the extent to which MI is effective in cardiovascular/pulmonary PT. Instructional methods include lecture, student participant, and question/answer.
Course Objectives
Upon course completion, students will
1. Appreciate the growth of evidence in physical therapy
2. Recognize challenges to “bench to bedside” knowledge translation
3. Recognize the importance of MeSH terms in searching the PubMed database
4. Recognize the importance of Boolean operators for creating effective searches
5. Appreciate the importance of triage in article selection
6. Distinguish among PubMed, PubMed Central, and the MeSH databases
7. Appreciate the scope and quality of evidence examining motivational interviewing for cardiovascular/pulmonary PT
8. Appreciate effect sizes and/or numbers needed to treat associated motivational interviewing in cardiovascular/pulmonary PT
9. Have a framework and process for initiating literature searches on physical therapy interventions.
