Course Description (4-hour course)
Tai Chi is an evidence-based exercise with a wide range of applications for therapy and function and personal wellness. Taught in a motor-developmental sequence, the Tai Chi Fundamentals-Adapted
(TCF-A) Program® is an accessible program for learning Tai Chi. In this 4-hour course, attendees will learn Tai Chi mind-body principles for health promotion and wellness and the 20 Basic Moves of the TCF-A Training Program. TCF-A Basic Moves can be performed free-standing or modified to accommodate individual needs (e.g. optional side support, walker support or seated versions).
Tai Chi can be used in a variety of PT treatment settings, including hospitals, rehab units, outpatient clinics, home care, community wellness classes, senior centers, and long-term care facilities. This course features lecture (evidence-based practice of tai chi), movement lab, clinical application and partner teaching practicums. This course qualifies as partial contact hours (4 of 30) for fulfillment for TCF-A Program® Instructor Certification (Tai Chi Health, LLC).
Course Objectives
1. Describe traditional Taijiquan (tai chi chuan) – a form of meditative movement therapy.
2. Appraise health benefits of tai chi (evidence-based practice).
3. Describe a medical model of tai chi (Tai Chi Fundamentals Adapted Programâ) and its
evidence-based falls prevention program (Tai Chi PrimeÔ ).
4. Delineate mind-body principles of tai chi and integrate into professional and personal wellness.
5. Perform 20 Basic Moves (2+ hours of LAB)
6. Integrate Tai Chi into professional practice and personal wellness.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Kristi Hallisy, PT, DSc is an Associate Professor at the University of WI-Madison DPT program. Her education includes a BS (PT) from the University of WI-Madison (1984), MS (Kinesiology) from the University of MI-Ann Arbor (1992) and a DSc (PT) from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI (2011). UW-Madison DPT teaching responsibilities include musculoskeletal coursework, health promotion and wellness, orthotics and tai chi independent study and research practicums. Dr. Hallisy is an ABPTS board certified specialist in orthopedics (OCS) with a wide array of PT tools including manual therapy (CMPT), exercise (CEEAA) and movement strategies (tai chi, qigong, yoga) to help PTs and PTAs promote optimal aging and wellness in their patients/clients. She is the Director of Mentoring for the UW-Health and Meriter Unity Point Orthopaedic Residency program. In 2008, she developed a tai chi–based group Movement Awareness and Exercise Program for Persons with Chronic Conditions for UW-Health Interprofessional Pain Clinic. Her research team developed Tai Chi Prime (TCP), a National Council on Aging evidence-based falls prevention program for community-dwelling older adults (Gerontologist, 2019). This program has also been culturally adapted (Inclusive TCP) for persons of color (African American/Black and Latinx), including full Spanish translation.
